Ok,I have had a few people ask me about Cancer Prevention recently.I know I mentioned it a few months ago,but think I should just remind people.
My mother died of cancer 17 years ago,my husband had it 2 years ago & his Mum contracted it 6 months after him.So as you can imagine I have researched A LOT about prevention. It just seems to be an epidemic in the Western World.Particularly of the "hormone related" cancers such as Breast,Ovarian,Prostate & Bowel.Other parts of the world do not have the same levels of these cancers. In fact the Chinese call Breast Cancer the "Rich Woman's Disease" as it is relatively uncommon there.
So why is this?Well in simple terms,I believe we have grown so far away from nature in what we eat, lifestyle, the environment & work, that we have in a way "brought it on ourselves".Major factors contributing to the growth of cancer, besides the known ones of smoking & drinking are:
1.Bad diet
2.Lack of exercise.
3.Pollutants(in & out of the home).
4.Pesticides,herbicides & hormones fed to animals.
5.Stress.
6.Lack of sleep.
7.Contraceptive Pill & HRT.
Today I will look at Diet:
Food has become so processed that its hard to see what it came from originally.Eating wholefoods like brown rice & wholemeal bread, fresh fruit & vegetables not only helps to keep weight in check, they also help to prevent cancer.Think raw food particularly.I don't mean meat,I mean raw fruit & vegetables, nuts etc. These foods spend less time in the bowel, & so help prevent Bowel Cancer by taking everything out with them!
There are also specific anti-cancer foods, like Turmeric which contains Curcumin.Blueberries,Strawberries & heap of other good stuff can prevent cancer.Check out:"Anti-cancer,a new way of Life" by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber. The list is too numerous to mention.
I strongly advise eating organic.Particularly for strawberries, grapes & blueberries.I do not eat a lot of meat, but when I do I try to buy organic as there has been a link suggested between the growth factors used to fatten up animals & hormone related cancers.
In summary I suggest making your own food from scratch, where possible.Get rid of processed food.Eat more fruit & vegetables.Buy organic, local fresh produce. If you eat meat make sure it is organic & eggs are free range.Try to eat more fish,& less red meat.Cut out dairy as much as you can.The hormones & growth factors used in dairy herds enter your body & play havoc with your hormones. All the countries that have big dairy industries have high rates of hormone related cancers. Those populations that traditionally do not eat dairy products, like Japan, have extremely low rates of Breast Cancer etc.A coincidence?I think not & if you want to borrow my 7 books I read all saying the same thing, just ask!
OK thats it for now! Hope it was useful to you.Health is so valuable you cannot put a price on it.But each of us has a responsibilty to ensure we look after ourselves.
Have a great week!
Bridget xx
